Plateau State University Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unresolved Demands

BOKKOS, Plateau State – Academic activities at Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, have been suspended after the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) commenced an indefinite strike over unresolved welfare and administrative issues.
The industrial action was announced on Wednesday after the union’s congress reviewed the university management’s response to a six-point demand earlier presented by the lecturers.
The strike follows the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university administration on August 11, which ASUU said ended without meaningful progress. Plateau State University Lecturers Begin Indefinite Strike Over Unresolved Demands
In a statement jointly signed by the chapter Chairperson, Dr. Vincent D. Choji, and Secretary, Lomka Kopdiya, the union said members had resolved to withdraw their services indefinitely.
Among the issues raised by ASUU is the implementation of the Contributory Pension Scheme for university employees.
The lecturers are also demanding full implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement, including payment of outstanding entitlements effective from January 1, 2026.
Other demands include Payment of 22 months’ arrears arising from the 25/35 per cent wage award.
Construction of staff quarters.
Improved security through perimeter fencing and protective trenches.
An end to what the union described as intimidation of its officials.
According to ASUU, discussions with the university management failed to produce satisfactory resolutions.
The union said it secured approval from ASUU’s National Executive Council before embarking on the strike.
Members have therefore been directed to suspend lectures, examinations and all academic responsibilities until further notice.
The industrial action is expected to disrupt academic activities at the university pending renewed negotiations between the union and management.
