ABUJA, Nigeria – Organised Labour has warned of possible industrial action over the Federal Government’s failure to implement an approved occupational hazard allowance for agricultural professionals in the public service.
The Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) on Wednesday said the allowance was approved during the 46th National Council on Establishment meeting, held in Ede, Osun State, between November 4 and 8, 2024.
However, the union said nearly two years later, the government is yet to issue the official circular required for payment to commence.
According to the council, several letters were sent to the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation in June and July 2026 requesting implementation, but no concrete action has followed.
The union argued that paying the allowance would improve morale, productivity and commitment among agricultural officers working under hazardous conditions.
The JNPSNC warned that continued delays could trigger an industrial dispute, including the possible picketing of the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.
Labour urged the Federal Government to immediately issue the implementation circular and commence payment, stressing that the allowance had already received official approval.
The union said prompt action would avert an avoidable confrontation and demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare.
