ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) are exploring collaboration to integrate weather and climate information into military training, research and operational planning.

NiMet disclosed this in a statement on Friday following a meeting between its Director-General, Professor Charles Anosike, and the NDA’s Academy Provost, Professor B.J. Ajibuah, at the agency’s headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, October 22, 2026. The discussions focused on opportunities to strengthen meteorological knowledge among military personnel and improve the use of weather information in planning and decision-making.

According to NiMet, the proposed partnership could support specialised training, professional development, joint research and knowledge exchange between the two institutions. Reliable weather and climate information can help military institutions assess environmental conditions when planning activities, training personnel and carrying out operations.

The statement quoted the NDA representative as highlighting the importance of meteorological information to military decision-making and the potential for cooperation with NiMet to strengthen professional capacity.

Both institutions also discussed the possibility of establishing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to provide a formal framework for collaboration. The proposed agreement would identify priority areas for engagement and guide joint initiatives in training, research and technical development.

The discussions reflect the potential role of meteorological services in supporting national security, institutional research and professional capacity development. However, the institutions have yet to announce a signed agreement, a timeline for implementation or specific programmes to be introduced under the proposed partnership.
