LAGOS, Nigeria – Lecturers at three Lagos State-owned universities are set to return to classrooms after the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) suspended its industrial action with immediate effect.
The decision affects the Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
The suspension was announced on Friday in a statement jointly signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the Steering Committee of ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman of ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman of ASUU-LASUTECH.
The union leaders said the suspension followed negotiations with the state government, although discussions on outstanding welfare issues are expected to continue. The union representatives expressed appreciation to individuals and organisations that supported their demands throughout the negotiations.
They acknowledged the contributions of media organisations, civil society groups, traditional rulers, students, parents, institutional leaders and other stakeholders.
The suspension is expected to allow academic activities to resume across the three institutions, easing concerns about disruptions to lectures and possible delays to the academic calendar.
However, the unions indicated that engagements with the Lagos State Government would continue until outstanding matters relating to staff welfare packages were fully resolved.
The development marks a step towards restoring normal academic activities, although the long-term stability of the universities will depend partly on the outcome of the remaining negotiations.
Students and parents will now be watching for official guidance from the individual institutions on the resumption of lectures and any adjustments to their academic calendars.
