SOKOTO, Nigeria – The Sokoto State Government and UNICEF commit N200 million to combat severe child malnutrition, as officials warn against diversion of critical nutrition supplies.
The intervention, unveiled on Sunday during a commodities handover, combines N100 million from the state government with a matching contribution from UNICEF.
UNICEF Deputy Representative Rownak Khan praises the state’s commitment.
“Not all states have accessed this funding. Sokoto demonstrates leadership in improving child survival and development,” she says.
Health officials reveal that over 260,000 children in the state suffer from severe acute malnutrition, with many lacking access to immunisation.
Khan stresses the need for integrated child health strategies.
“Nutrition, vaccination and maternal care must work together to deliver impact,” she adds.
UNICEF Sokoto Field Office Head Michael Juma says the intervention will expand access to therapeutic food and essential supplies.
Sokoto Health Commissioner Abubakar Faruk warns against misuse of resources.
“Any diversion of these life-saving commodities will not be tolerated,” he states.
Faruk says strict monitoring systems are introduced to ensure only verified beneficiaries receive support.
Stakeholders say the initiative could position Sokoto as a model for effective nutrition funding if sustained.
