LAGOS, Nigeria – The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) urge President Bola Tinubu to ensure transparency in the appointment of Nigeria’s next electoral chief.
In a letter dated 27 September 2025, Deputy Director, SERAP, Kolawole Oluwadare said, “The selection process for Mr Yakubu’s replacement must not be a closed shop. A transparent process serves the public interest.”
SERAP demands Tinubu disclose candidates’ names, consultations with the Council of State, and ensure nominees are non-partisan.
“Openness and transparency in this process would improve public trust in INEC’s independence,” SERAP said.
The organisation cites Section 154(1) of the Constitution, which requires Senate confirmation and Council of State input. It warned secrecy would undermine the credibility of the 2027 general elections.
