NAFDAC Director-General, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye
ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has unveiled a National Strategy and Roadmap for Trans-Fatty Acid (TFA) Regulation, marking a decisive step toward a healthier national food supply.
Announcing the initiative, NAFDAC Director-General Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye said the roadmap reaffirms Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding citizens from diet-related heart diseases and premature deaths.
“Eliminating industrially produced trans fats is possible, achievable, and urgent,” Adeyeye said. “With this roadmap, Nigeria is determined to protect its citizens and secure a food supply free from trans-fat dangers.”
She noted that Nigeria limits industrially produced trans fats to no more than 2g per 100g of fat or oil, earning World Health Organisation (WHO) recognition in 2023 as one of seven countries with best-practice trans fat policies.
The phased strategy prioritises industry reformulation, laboratory strengthening, compliance monitoring, public education, and cross-sector partnerships. Supported by Resolve to Save Lives, WHO, and others, NAFDAC has expanded laboratory capacity to detect TFAs, reinforcing implementation.
The agency described the move as part of its mission of “Safeguarding the Health of the Nation.”
