LAGOS, Nigeria – Lagos State Parking Authority plans to introduce paid on-street parking across key commercial districts before the end of 2026 to tackle traffic congestion and restore order on major roads.
General Manager Adebisi Adelabu announces the rollout on Wednesday during a stakeholder meeting in Lagos with Akeem Dauda and council officials.
The scheme will begin with a pilot phase in Ikeja and selected councils before expanding statewide.
“The On-Street Parking Scheme will improve parking management, enhance traffic flow and generate employment opportunities,” Adelabu says.
Authorities say the initiative aims to reduce indiscriminate roadside parking, a major contributor to gridlock in business districts including Lagos Island, Surulere and Apapa.
LASPA explains that local governments previously managed parking operations before oversight shifted to the state authority.
Dauda welcomes the plan and calls for extensive public sensitisation ahead of implementation.
Officials say the programme forms part of wider traffic management reforms designed to improve urban mobility and create jobs across Lagos.
