LAGOS, Nigeria – The National Association of Nigerian Students threatens protests against South African-linked businesses in Nigeria over renewed xenophobic attacks reportedly targeting Nigerians abroad.
The group’s Southwest Zone D announces planned demonstrations in Lagos against companies including MTN Group and MultiChoice Group.
In a statement signed by Adeyemo Josiah Kayode, on Wednesday the students’ body condemns what it describes as recurring violence against Nigerians in South Africa.
“The continued targeting of Nigerians is unacceptable and must come to an immediate end,” the statement says.
The warning follows reports of killings linked to renewed anti-foreigner tensions, as controversial migrant protest movement March and March continues demonstrations in Durban.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa dismisses allegations of xenophobic attacks despite mounting diplomatic pressure from several African countries.
NANS says silence and delayed responses are no longer acceptable, insisting that the safety and dignity of Nigerians abroad “must be guaranteed, not negotiated.”
The group adds that peaceful demonstrations and advocacy campaigns will continue until stronger action is taken.
