Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu
LAGOS, Nigeria – Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has ordered the demolition of all illegal structures erected on the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, warning occupants to vacate before a major enforcement operation begins next week.
Speaking on Saturday during the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in Surulere, the governor said the exercise would cover the corridor from Orile-Iganmu to Okokomaiko.
“This is the final notice to everyone occupying the median of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway,” Sanwo-Olu said.
“Everything there will go. Every illegal structure will be removed.”
The governor said the median was never designed for markets, residential structures or commercial activities.
“It is a highway median, and we must preserve it, especially considering the huge public investment on that corridor,” he said.
Thousands of enforcement personnel are expected to participate in the operation.
“We will remain there until the job is completed. No one should expect any exemption,” the governor added.
Sanwo-Olu also announced additional investments in waste management.
He disclosed that Lagos had ordered 150 new waste compactors and smaller trucks to serve difficult-to-access communities.
The governor said work was progressing on a modern recycling facility expected to process about 4,250 metric tonnes of waste daily.
He urged residents to support waste disposal systems by paying sanitation bills promptly.
“Waste management is not the responsibility of the government alone. It is a collective responsibility,” he said.
