ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has announced plans to install Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras on the Niger Bridge as part of efforts to strengthen security, curb vandalism and protect one of Nigeria’s most critical transport infrastructures.
The initiative, unveiled on Friday, is aimed at enhancing surveillance around the bridge by enabling security agencies to monitor activities in real time and respond more swiftly to security threats.
According to the government, the CCTV system will provide continuous visual monitoring of the bridge, helping authorities detect suspicious movements, prevent acts of vandalism and improve overall security management.
The planned deployment comes amid growing concerns over the vandalism of public infrastructure, which continues to pose significant risks to transportation, economic activities and national development.
Officials said the surveillance cameras would also support investigations into security-related incidents by providing recorded footage that could assist law enforcement agencies in identifying suspects and reconstructing events.
The Niger Bridge serves as one of Nigeria’s busiest transportation corridors, linking the South-East and South-South with other parts of the country. Its strategic importance has made the protection of the facility a top priority for the Federal Government.
