ILORIN, Nigeria – Suspected militants linked to Ansaru launch a deadly assault on a military base in Kwara State, killing at least three soldiers and injuring four others.
The early-morning attack occurred around 3 a.m. in Kemanji village, near the Kainji National Park, a region increasingly flagged for insurgent activity.
Security sources say the attackers storm the camp under cover of darkness, opening fire on troops.
“At least three soldiers were killed, while others, including a vigilante, sustained injuries,” a local source says.
The assailants reportedly seized eight motorcycles and a gun truck during the raid.
A forest guard confirms the coordinated nature of the attack, while another source claims some attackers are killed during the exchange.
Although multiple armed groups operate in the region, sources link the assault to Ansaru, a breakaway faction of Boko Haram.
Security analysts warn that forest corridors in North-Central Nigeria are becoming safe havens for extremist groups.
The incident raises fresh concerns over the spread of insurgency beyond the North-East.
Authorities have yet to issue an official statement, but residents in nearby communities report heightened fear and call for increased security presence.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the full scale of casualties and damage.
