President Bola Tinubu and Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate
ABUJA, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu and Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, have discussed measures to improve access to affordable, quality healthcare and strengthen Nigeria’s health system.
The discussions focused on the Nigeria Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, the Federal Government’s coordinating framework for driving reforms and improving healthcare delivery across the country.
The meeting was disclosed in a report released in Abuja on Tuesday following a briefing by Pate to the President on Monday. According to the report, the engagement reviewed ongoing efforts to expand access to essential health services while strengthening the health system’s capacity to respond to emerging challenges.
Pate said the government’s priority was to improve healthcare delivery and ensure that Nigerians could access effective treatment without facing overwhelming financial costs. “Our priority remains clear as we strengthen delivery systems and ensure every Nigerian can obtain care that is both effective and within reach without crushing costs,” he said.
The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s stated objectives of reducing preventable deaths, easing the physical and financial burdens associated with illness, and improving health outcomes nationwide. However, the effectiveness of the reforms will depend on implementation, including the availability of essential medicines, adequate staffing, functional health facilities and mechanisms to protect households from high out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure.
