PORT HARCOURT, Nigeria – Police in Rivers State have rescued a kidnapped man after a night pursuit of suspected kidnappers in Port Harcourt led to the arrest of one suspect and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle and ammunition.
The incident occurred on Thursday at about 10:15pm after the Rivers State Police Command received information about a kidnapping in the Eliozu-Rumuokoro area.
The command said its Convoy Patrol Team stationed at Eliozu immediately mobilised and sighted the suspected kidnappers, who attempted to escape towards Rumuokoro through Eligbolu. “Acting swiftly on the report, the Convoy Patrol Team stationed at Eliozu sighted the suspected kidnappers and immediately gave them a hot chase towards Rumuokoro by Eligbolu,” the command’s spokesperson, Agabe Kaborlo, said in a statement on Saturday.
Under the direction of the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, operatives from the Special Area Division joined the pursuit.
The operation resulted in the arrest of a suspect identified as Sunday Rufus, a native of Ikwerre Local Government Area, while the kidnapped man, identified as Emmanuel, was rescued.
The victim was subsequently taken for medical attention, the command said. Police also recovered an AK-47 rifle, two rounds of 7.62mm ammunition and a white tricycle with registration number PHC 756 ZY from the scene.
The command said investigations were ongoing to track down other members of the suspected criminal network.
It assured residents that operations would continue against kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state.
