Korede Abdullah LAGOS, Nigeria – The Elegant Nurses Forum (ENF) has accused the Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences of imposing excessive school fees on students, calling on the state government to review the charges and publish a transparent breakdown of all payments.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the forum described the alleged fee increases as insensitive amid Nigeria’s worsening economic hardship, warning that the rising cost of nursing education could worsen the country’s shortage of healthcare professionals.
Signed by its National Coordinator, Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide, the statement alleged that final-year students were being required to pay about ₦200,000 for the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) qualifying examinations despite claims that the council’s official examination fees are significantly lower.
“The Elegant Nurses Forum strongly condemns the continuous increase in the cost of nursing education at the Ogun State College of Nursing Sciences. At a time when millions of Nigerians are struggling with the high cost of living, it is unacceptable that students and their parents are being subjected to fresh financial burdens almost every academic session,” the forum said.
The ENF further alleged that the amount demanded excludes accommodation and feeding during the examinations and claimed that graduates would also be required to pay an additional ₦120,000 licensing fee after completing the examinations.
According to the group, information available indicates that the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria charges approximately ₦12,000 per examination paper, bringing the official fee for three papers to about ₦36,000.
“Yet, students are being asked to pay far beyond this amount without a clear and transparent explanation of the additional charges,” the statement added.
Calling on Governor Dapo Abiodun to intervene, the forum urged the state government to reduce the fees, increase funding for nursing education and adopt policies that make healthcare training more affordable.
