Building Collapse: NEMA Reveals 4 Warning Signs That Should Trigger Immediate Evacuation

ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has warned Nigerians to pay attention to early warning signs of structural failure to reduce deaths and injuries from building collapses.
In a public safety advisory published on its X page on Sunday, the agency said early detection of structural defects and immediate evacuation could help prevent avoidable loss of lives.
NEMA identified four major warning signs that residents should not ignore:
Cracks on walls and floors
Sagging roofs
Leaking water
Doors and windows that suddenly become difficult to open or close
The agency advised residents who notice any of these signs to immediately report the situation to the relevant authorities and evacuate the building.
How to Prevent Building Collapse
NEMA also outlined preventive measures for property owners, developers and residents, urging Nigerians to:
- Build only with the necessary approvals.
- Use qualified professionals.
- Use quality building materials.
- Avoid occupying or living in dilapidated structures.
What to Do If Trapped in a Collapsing Building
For people who become trapped during a building collapse, NEMA advised them to remain calm and take steps to protect themselves while waiting for rescue.
The agency recommended that trapped persons:
Stay calm.
Protect their heads from falling objects.
Avoid using lifts.
Move away from the immediate danger zone where possible.
Call for help immediately.
