KATSINA, Nigeria – Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has presented appointment letters to 2,158 newly recruited teachers, saying the exercise will tackle teacher shortages, improve classroom instruction and strengthen learning outcomes across public schools in the state.
The teacher recruitment exercise, announced on Friday in Katsina, is part of the state government’s broader education reform programme aimed at expanding access to quality education through merit-based recruitment and sustained investment in human capital.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony, Radda described the appointments as another milestone in his administration’s drive to reposition education and build a stronger workforce for the future.
“Today marks another important milestone in our administration’s unwavering commitment to rebuilding and repositioning the education sector in Katsina State,” the governor said.
He noted that his administration recruited and deployed 7,323 teachers in 2023 and employed more than 1,800 healthcare workers earlier this year to strengthen public service delivery.
The governor added that his administration has constructed more than 49 junior and senior secondary schools, established three Special Smart Schools, rehabilitated over 340 primary schools, trained more than 25,000 teachers, introduced a ₦30,000 rural teachers’ allowance, distributed 18,000 digital tablets and provided electric motorcycles for teachers serving remote communities.
“The recruitment exercise was deliberately designed to be transparent, merit-based and inclusive. For the first time in the history of our state, teacher recruitment was conducted based on the actual staffing needs of individual schools and subject requirements,” he said.
Earlier, Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education Yusuf Suleiman Jibia said 64,598 applicants applied for the recruitment exercise. Following screening, 8,889 candidates were shortlisted, 3,683 passed the computer-Based Test and advanced to oral interviews, while 2,158 candidates emerged successful.
