ABUJA, Nigeria – The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has requested access to some of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) biometric verification equipment as part of efforts to strengthen examination operations while keeping costs affordable for candidates.
The proposal was presented by the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, during a courtesy visit by the Board’s management team to INEC headquarters in Abuja on friday, where both institutions explored opportunities for technical cooperation, resource sharing and stronger inter-agency collaboration.
Aina said the request was driven by the need to improve examination administration without increasing registration fees, noting that both JAMB and INEC depend extensively on biometric technology for identity verification.
“Our request is essentially about resource optimisation. We want to continue giving our candidates the best possible services within the current fee regime without having to increase the cost to them. If a sister agency has resources that are not currently in use, there is nothing wrong in exploring whether those resources can be deployed to support another government agency,” he said.
Responding, the Chairman of INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), welcomed the proposal and directed the Commission’s Director of Information and Communications Technology to conduct a technical assessment of the request.
He said the review would determine the availability, operational status and suitability of biometric devices that could potentially be deployed to support JAMB’s examination activities.
Amupitan described the engagement as a positive step toward strengthening collaboration between federal institutions and improving public service delivery through shared expertise and infrastructure.
The INEC chairman further disclosed plans to reciprocate the visit by leading a delegation to JAMB headquarters as both agencies work toward deepening their partnership on technology-driven public service delivery.
