GOMBE, Nigeria – Gombe Obstetric Fistula Centre has been commissioned alongside a new Paediatric Stabilisation Centre at the General Hospital in Deba, as the Gombe State Government steps up efforts to improve maternal and child healthcare across the state.
The facilities were inaugurated by Deputy Governor Dr Manassah Daniel Jatau, representing Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, in Yamaltu-Deba Local Government Area. According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Deputy Governor’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Jack A. Tasha, the projects are designed to expand access to specialised healthcare for women and children.
Jatau says the new centres demonstrate the administration’s commitment to strengthening healthcare delivery through sustained investment in infrastructure and collaboration with development partners.
He says the state has prioritised healthcare since 2019 by establishing 24-hour clinics in all 114 political wards, expanding medical infrastructure and implementing people-centred programmes aimed at improving access to quality healthcare services.
According to Jatau, the centre will provide comprehensive treatment for women living with obstetric fistula, helping them recover physically while restoring their dignity and confidence.
“This facility is aimed at restoring dignity, rebuilding lives and giving women suffering from fistula the opportunity to regain their confidence and rightful place in society,” he says.
Earlier, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning Ibrahim Ali Jalo described the commissioning as another milestone towards achieving universal access to quality healthcare, particularly for women, newborns and children.
Jalo says the fistula centre will provide comprehensive care for affected women, while the paediatric stabilisation centre will offer lifesaving treatment for critically malnourished children. He thanks UNFPA and the Taimaka Project for supporting maternal and child health interventions and calls for effective management of the facilities.
