ABUJA, Nigeria – FCT teachers protest disrupts activities at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) on Monday after members of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) prevent the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission, Mr. Emeka Ezeh, from addressing candidates sitting the 2025 promotion examination.
Thousands of teachers from the six area councils gather outside the university’s lecture hall along the Kubwa Expressway, blocking access to the commission chairman as tensions between teachers and authorities continue.
The protest is led by FCT NUT Chairman Comrade Abdullahi Mohammed Shafas and the union’s General Secretary, Comrade Margareth F. Jethro.
Mr. Ezeh arrives at about 8:12 a.m. accompanied by armed police officers and is expected to address civil servants before the examination begins.
However, protesting teachers stop him from entering the lecture hall, preventing him from speaking to candidates assembled inside the venue.
Following a brief standoff, Ezeh withdraws from the entrance with security personnel before entering the examination hall through an alternative route.
Teachers remain outside the venue chanting solidarity songs as the demonstration continues.
The immediate reason for Monday’s protest is not officially disclosed at the venue, although the action comes against the backdrop of ongoing disputes between FCT teachers and the relevant authorities.
The incident highlights growing tensions within the Federal Capital Territory’s education sector as teachers continue to press demands related to their welfare and employment conditions.
No violence is reported during the protest, while the promotion examination proceeds after the commission chairman gains access through another entrance.
