ABUJA, Nigeria – The Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) has inducted 349 foreign-trained medical and dental doctors, formally integrating them into the nation’s healthcare system after they successfully completed the Council’s professional assessment examinations.
The inductees — 340 medical doctors and nine dentists — received certificates authorising them to practise in Nigeria, a move the Council says will bolster the country’s overstretched health workforce and reinforce quality standards in clinical service delivery.
Speaking at the ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday, MDCN Registrar Fatima Kyari urged the new doctors to prioritise professionalism and commit fully to their mandatory one-year housemanship programme, which she described as the crucial foundation of their careers.
“Parents, please allow your children to complete their housemanship. This one year is a very important foundational aspect of their training… They will be the first line of care under consultant supervision, and they will learn a lot,” she said.
Ms Kyari acknowledged the rising international demand for Nigerian doctors, noting that foreign institutions actively recruit immediately after induction. “Nigerian doctors are sought all over the world… But we also want to keep our doctors at home,” she added.
President of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Bala Audu, reminded the inductees that the profession demands discipline, ethical conduct and humility.
“The practice of medicine is regulated by high ethical standards… There are great expectations from you, both within and outside the profession,” he said. He advised them to recognise their limitations, work effectively in teams and seek help when necessary.
