Education Minister, Dr. Tunji Alausa
ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has intensified efforts to achieve nationwide enrolment on the Digitalised Nigeria Education Management Information System (DNEMIS), urging state governments, local councils and private school operators to register on the platform to strengthen education planning and policy implementation.
Education Minister Tunji Alausa made the appeal on Wednesday during the official launch of DNEMIS in Abuja, describing the national education database as a critical tool for delivering evidence-based reforms across Nigeria’s education sector.
The DNEMIS platform captures comprehensive information on classrooms, teacher strength, student enrolment, computer facilities, water supply, sanitation, hygiene infrastructure and other key indicators required for effective school monitoring, supervision and resource allocation.
Alausa says meaningful transformation of Nigeria’s education system depends on the availability of accurate, reliable and timely data.
“Meaningful reforms in education can only be achieved when they are supported by reliable and comprehensive data,” the minister says.
He explains that the digital platform will improve how education data is collected, analysed and utilised, enabling governments at all levels to identify infrastructure gaps, deploy resources more efficiently and monitor the impact of education policies.
Addressing private school proprietors, the minister dismisses concerns that registration could lead to increased taxation.
“This exercise is not about taxation. It is about ensuring that every learner and every school is reflected in our national education planning.”
He reveals that about 90 per cent of public schools have already been captured on the platform, while only about 50 per cent of private schools have completed registration.
He notes that the database currently contains records from approximately 90,000 public schools and is expected to support planning for more than 50 million learners nationwide.
Alausa urges state governments to intensify public awareness campaigns to ensure full participation by schools within their jurisdictions.
