ABUJA, Nigeria – The Federal Government has warned parents, teachers, school proprietors, principals, invigilators and students against engaging in examination malpractice, declaring that stricter measures are being implemented to restore credibility to Nigeria’s public examination system.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, issued the warning on Thursday during a meeting with the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) and other stakeholders, saying the reforms align with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to rebuilding confidence in Nigeria’s education sector.
Alausa described examination malpractice as one of the biggest threats to educational standards, noting that it creates an unfair advantage for candidates who rely on leaked examination materials while undermining students who prepare diligently.
According to him, malpractice has become deeply rooted across the education system and can no longer be treated as a problem involving only students.
He stressed that parents, teachers, school owners, principals and examination officials all have responsibilities in ensuring that examinations are conducted fairly and transparently.
The Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Said Ahmad, urged private school proprietors to support the reforms, noting that tighter examination controls may initially expose weaknesses in students’ preparation.
She observed that some candidates who excel in internal examinations may have become accustomed to accessing leaked examination questions before external examinations, making genuine preparation less common.
Prof. Ahmad said the planned introduction of serialised examination questions would significantly reduce opportunities for question leakages while encouraging students to study consistently.
The Federal Government assured stakeholders that it would continue working with private schools, examination bodies and other education partners to strengthen examination integrity and ensure that academic qualifications are earned through merit, knowledge and hard work.
