ABUJA, Nigeria – A consultant community ophthalmologist, Dr. Bolarinwa Tota of the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), has urged Nigerians to blink more frequently while using phones, computers, and other digital devices to prevent dry eyes and vision strain.
Speaking in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Tuesday in Ilorin, Tota cautioned that prolonged screen exposure without adequate blinking can lead to eye dryness, headaches, blurry vision, and irritation.
“Blinking consciously helps maintain eye moisture and reduces discomfort caused by long hours of screen use,” she explained.
According to her, staring at digital screens for extended periods lowers the blink rate and strains the eyes, leading to a gritty or burning sensation.
Tota advised users to take short screen breaks, practise the 20-20-20 rule — looking 20 feet away every 20 minutes for 20 seconds — and blink deliberately to keep the eyes lubricated.
She also encouraged regular eye screening to detect diseases such as glaucoma and cataract early.
“About 75 per cent of blindness cases are preventable with early detection,” Tota said. “People should prioritise routine eye checks to safeguard long-term vision.”
The ophthalmologist stressed that simple habits like frequent blinking and routine examinations can go a long way in maintaining healthy eyesight.
