Abuja, Nigeria – President Bola Tinubu directs all political appointees seeking elective office in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.
The directive, issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Tuesday applies to ministers, advisers, assistants, and heads of government agencies.
According to the circular signed by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, the move aligns with provisions of the Electoral Act 2026 and the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
“Accordingly, all affected officials are required to submit their formal resignation letters not later than March 31, 2026,” the circular states.
The presidency says the measure is aimed at ensuring transparency, preventing abuse of office, and promoting fairness in the electoral process.
Tinubu emphasises that compliance with electoral laws is critical to strengthening democratic institutions.
“He urged all concerned officials to ensure strict compliance,” the statement adds.
The directive comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with party primaries expected to commence in line with INEC’s schedule.
Under Nigerian law, political appointees must step down before contesting elective positions to ensure a level playing field.
