Tinubu Approves New Army Battalion for Kwara to Tackle Banditry, Kidnappings

KWARA, Nigeria — President Bola Tinubu has approved the establishment of a new Nigerian Army battalion in Kwara State as part of efforts to strengthen security operations and curb the growing threat of banditry, kidnapping and other violent crimes in the state.
The new military formation will be located in Omu Aran, headquarters of Irepodun Local Government Area, and is expected to enhance troop deployment, improve rapid response to security threats and reinforce ongoing counter-terrorism operations across Kwara.
Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq announced the approval in a statement issued on Tuesday through his Deputy Chief Press Secretary, Mashood Agboola, describing the development as a major boost to the state’s security architecture.
The governor said the Federal Government’s decision reflects its commitment to restoring peace in communities affected by criminal activities and protecting residents from increasing security threats.
“On behalf of the people and government of Kwara State, I sincerely thank Mr President for fulfilling yet another promise to the state. We are confident that the new battalion will significantly strengthen efforts against terrorism and kidnapping across various parts of Kwara,” AbdulRazaq said.
He also commended the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for facilitating the approval, describing the response as timely amid growing security concerns.
AbdulRazaq further acknowledged the Office of the National Security Adviser and other security agencies for their continued collaboration in ongoing operations aimed at rescuing kidnap victims, dismantling criminal camps and restoring safety in forests and rural communities.
The approval comes amid persistent security concerns in parts of Kwara, particularly Babanla community in Ifelodun Local Government Area, where residents have reported repeated attacks by suspected bandits, including killings and abductions.
AHR reports that strengthening military presence, improving intelligence coordination and supporting community-based security initiatives remain critical to tackling insecurity and protecting lives and livelihoods across Nigeria.
