LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Government says more than 20,000 residents have benefited from its mortgage and rent-to-own housing scheme over the past 12 years.
Commissioner for Housing, Moruf Akinderu-Fatai, disclosed this on Wednesday during a ministerial press briefing marking the third year of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.
Akinderu-Fatai says the programme is helping to reduce the housing deficit and improve access to affordable homes in Lagos.
According to him, the first batch of beneficiaries under the rent-to-own scheme exited the programme successfully in August 2024 after completing repayment plans.
“The third edition of the exit ceremony of 110 mortgagors was held on July 2, 2025,” the commissioner says.
He reveals that the Lagos State Mortgage Board currently has 2,207 pending applications for home allocation across different housing schemes.
Akinderu-Fatai also says the Lagos State Development and Property Company completed 12 housing projects, delivering 1,190 housing units within seven years.
He adds that 29 ongoing projects are expected to provide an additional 3,149 units across the state.
The commissioner says the government has upgraded infrastructure in state-owned estates while creating thousands of jobs through construction and facility management projects.
“This development reflects the commitment of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s administration to transform the housing sector,” he says.
Housing experts say affordable mortgage schemes remain essential in addressing Lagos’ growing urban housing demand as population pressure continues to increase.
