MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has approved an additional ₦200 million for the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Azare, bringing the state’s total support for the federal health facility to ₦400 million.
Zulum announced the donation during an inspection visit to the hospital, where he praised its rapid growth just six months after commencing full clinical operations.
According to a statement issued on Sunday by the Borno State Government, the hospital has treated about 4,000 patients and successfully carried out more than 300 major orthopaedic surgeries, including hip and knee replacements and complex spinal procedures.
“The efforts here are truly amazing. The President approved the establishment of this National Orthopaedic Hospital about a year ago, and the hospital began operations only about six months ago. Yet, despite not receiving capital releases or overhead funding, you can see the wonders that commitment has achieved,” Zulum said.
The governor said the additional funding would strengthen healthcare delivery and support the continued expansion of specialist services at the hospital.
“As Governor of Borno State, I will continue to support this institution. Yesterday, I told the management I would give them ₦50 million, but today I am announcing an additional donation of ₦200 million to further strengthen the hospital,” he added.
Zulum commended the hospital’s management, led by Medical Director Ramat, as well as the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, for supporting the institution’s rapid development.
He noted that although established primarily for orthopaedic care, the hospital now provides obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatric and other specialist medical services, attracting patients from across the North-East and neighbouring Cameroon.
The governor also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Coordinating Minister of Health Muhammad Ali Pate for supporting the development of specialised healthcare infrastructure.
