Yobe Governor Mai Mala Buni
YOBE, Nigeria – Governor Mai Mala Buni says Yobe State’s post-insurgency recovery must be anchored on a coordinated, multisectoral development strategy that simultaneously strengthens infrastructure, peacebuilding and social stability.
Speaking on Wednesday while inspecting the August 27 Stadium in Damaturu, the governor stresses that rebuilding communities devastated by more than a decade of Boko Haram violence cannot rely on a single-sector approach. He describes the inspection as part of wider engagements with stakeholders and journalists to demonstrate progress in security and reconstruction.
“Let me sincerely thank you for coming to Yobe to see for yourselves the modest achievements we have been able to put in place and the relative peace we are enjoying,” Buni says.
Yobe ranks among the state’s worst affected by insurgency, with entire communities displaced and public assets destroyed. According to the governor, the administration responds by investing across security, infrastructure, health, education and social services, ensuring recovery reaches all segments of society.
“After over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency, the recovery strategy has to be multisectoral. That is why we have given attention to all sectors of development,” he says.
Buni recalls that the land hosting the August 27 Stadium once fell under insurgent control but is now fully secured and redeveloped, symbolising the state’s return to normalcy.
“You can see how peaceful Yobe is today. At a point in time, where we are standing was under Boko Haram control,” he adds.
During the inspection, the governor directs authorities to restrict heavy-duty vehicles around the stadium to protect the facility and ensure public safety. He expresses satisfaction with the quality of work, describing the project as evidence of value-driven governance.
“I am really impressed with what I have seen, because that is how it should be to have value,” Buni says.
