MAIDUGURI, Nigeria – Troops of Operation HADIN KAI, supported by personnel of the Nigeria Police Mobile Force (MOPOL), have foiled an attempted mass abduction by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Monguno, rescuing 46 students during a coordinated overnight operation.
The attempted attack occurred at about 1:30 a.m. on Sunday, according to a statement issued by the Acting Military Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni.
The school, currently being used by the Borno State Government as temporary hostel accommodation for students of the Federal Polytechnic, Monguno, came under attack as the insurgents attempted to abduct the students.
Goni said security personnel stationed at the facility immediately engaged the attackers, while the Sector 3 Quick Reaction Force (QRF) swiftly reinforced the location, forcing the terrorists to abandon the operation.
According to him, the coordinated response prevented what could have been a large-scale abduction and compelled the insurgents to flee without taking any of the students.
“Following the operation, all 46 students were rescued and evacuated to Kinnasara Barracks in Monguno, where they underwent medical assessment and received necessary care. The students have all been confirmed medically stable,” Goni said.
“The terrorists were forced to abandon their criminal mission and flee in confusion without achieving their objective,” he added.
The military spokesperson, however, disclosed that the attack turned tragic when some students were struck by stray bullets fired by the fleeing terrorists during the exchange of gunfire.
He did not state the exact number of casualties but confirmed that parts of the school’s infrastructure were damaged during the firefight.
