ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has intensified security measures across custodial centres after a death row inmate allegedly conducted a live broadcast on TikTok from inside the Ibara Medium Custodial Centre in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Nwakuche, ordered immediate investigations and directed that the inmate be transferred to another custodial facility under enhanced security arrangements.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, Service spokesperson CSC Jane Osuji said the inmate was found in unlawful possession of a mobile phone, which has been recovered and retained as evidence.
She said preliminary investigations revealed security lapses that may have enabled the breach, describing the incident as a serious violation of the Nigerian Correctional Service Act 2019, Service Standing Orders and other operational regulations.
According to Osuji, the Correctional Service has introduced several reforms to strengthen custodial security and prevent the smuggling of prohibited items into correctional facilities.
She said the latest incident has further reinforced the need for strict compliance with existing security procedures nationwide.
The service added that investigations are ongoing to determine whether any correctional personnel or external collaborators facilitated the breach through negligence or deliberate misconduct.
“We assure Nigerians that anyone found to have facilitated, aided, condoned or failed in their responsibilities in connection with this incident will face appropriate disciplinary and administrative sanctions in accordance with extant regulations,” Nwakuche said.
The Correctional Service reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening custodial security, eliminating prohibited items from correctional facilities and safeguarding public confidence in Nigeria’s correctional system.
