ABUJA, Nigeria – The Chairman of the House Committee on Internal Security, Garba Ibrahim Muhammad, has revealed that terrorists have issued threats to bomb the National Assembly Complex, prompting renewed calls for enhanced security architecture.
Speaking on Tuesday at a public hearing on a bill to establish a Legislative Security Directorate, Garba said the National Assembly has increasingly become a target for criminal infiltration, organised vandalism, identity fraud, and violent intimidation.
“We have received threats from terrorists to bomb the National Assembly Complex and threats from protesters to lock up the National Assembly,” he said.
“If legislative activities are truncated, there will be no representation, no oversight, no budget, no plenary. That will destabilise democracy and the nation,” he cautioned.
Garba explained that the proposed directorate would coordinate intelligence, access control, surveillance, emergency response, and institutional protection in line with global parliamentary best practices.
While stressing that Parliament must remain accessible to citizens, he said access must not compromise safety.
He also encouraged state Houses of Assembly to adopt similar frameworks to safeguard legislative operations nationwide.
The bill was considered at Conference Hall 028, House of Representatives Wing, Abuja.
