ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Presidency strengthens its push for improved women’s healthcare by forging a strategic alliance with the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), signalling renewed momentum under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
The partnership takes shape during a high-level meeting in Abuja, where Senior Special Assistant to the President on Women’s Health, Adanna Steinacker, receives MWAN’s national and Federal Capital Territory executives.
Steinacker describes MWAN as a critical force within Nigeria’s healthcare system, citing its unique blend of clinical expertise and community advocacy.
“MWAN operates where policy meets reality. Their experience reflects both evidence-based medicine and the lived experiences of women and girls,” she says.
She reaffirms that women’s health remains central to the Renewed Hope Agenda, recalling the launch of RenewHER, the Presidential Women’s Health Transformation Initiative, in September 2025.
According to Steinacker, RenewHER rests on three pillars: a national digital platform to boost health literacy; region-specific campaigns addressing maternal, reproductive and mental health; and high-level summits to unify government, civil society and private-sector actors.
She highlights mental health as a persistent blind spot.
“Women’s mental health is still under-discussed. We must normalise conversations and build stronger support systems,” she says.
MWAN National President, Dr Zainab Mohammad-Idris, pledges full commitment to the partnership, noting the association’s decades-long involvement in maternal and child health.
“With presidential backing, we can scale our impact and save more lives,” she says.
FCT MWAN President, Dr Maureen Umeakuewulu, echoes the call, urging targeted support for maternal mortality reduction and nationwide cervical cancer screening.
The engagement underscores growing political will to close long-standing gaps in women’s healthcare through coordinated national action.
