KATSINA, Nigeria – The Katsina State Police Command has arrested two suspects linked to the alleged trafficking of illicit drugs in Funtua Local Government Area, recovering 2,000 tablets suspected to be Diazepam during a routine anti-crime operation.
Police spokesperson, Abubakar Sadiq, disclosed the development in a statement on Saturday, identifying the primary suspect as 27-year-old Jibrin Salisu.
According to the command, officers attached to the Central Police Station in Funtua intercepted Salisu on June 15 while he was riding a motorcycle during a routine patrol operation.
A search conducted by the operatives reportedly led to the recovery of two sachets containing 2,000 tablets suspected to be Diazepam, a controlled prescription medication frequently abused for non-medical purposes.
Preliminary investigations revealed that Salisu allegedly obtained the drugs from a 26-year-old woman, Faith Eze, and was instructed to deliver them to another suspect identified as Gurgu, who remains at large.
Acting on intelligence gathered during the investigation, police operatives tracked down and arrested Eze. Authorities said both suspects confessed to involvement in the illegal drug trade.
The command stated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and dismantle the wider distribution network connected to the operation.
Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar Fage, reiterated the command’s determination to combat drug trafficking and substance abuse across the state.
He warned individuals engaged in the distribution and sale of illicit substances to desist or face prosecution.
The police chief also urged residents to support security agencies with credible information that could assist ongoing efforts to curb drug-related crimes and improve public safety.
Security experts have repeatedly linked the proliferation of illicit drugs to rising cases of criminality, youth addiction and violence, making drug control a key component of law enforcement operations across Nigeria.
