JALINGO, Nigeria – The Nigeria Union of Teachers has warned that worsening insecurity across Nigeria is threatening the future of education, as attacks on schools, teachers and students continue to undermine learning and human capital development.
Speaking on Saturday in Jalingo, Taraba State, the National President, NUT, Audu Titus Amba, expressed concern over the growing number of violent incidents targeting educational institutions nationwide.
According to him, schools cannot function effectively in an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.
“If the safety of learners and teachers cannot be guaranteed, then the nation’s educational development is at risk,” Amba said.
The union leader stressed that parents send their children to school expecting them to receive quality education and return home safely, adding that persistent insecurity threatens that expectation.
He described attacks on schools and education personnel as disturbing and detrimental to national development, noting that the union would continue to advocate for stronger protection of teachers and students.
Amba cited recent security incidents in Borno State, Oyo State and Kogi State, including the killing of two teachers during the conduct of examinations organised by the West African Examinations Council.
He condemned the actions of bandits and other criminal groups, describing the continued loss of innocent lives as unacceptable.
“People are being killed indiscriminately as if they were animals,” he lamented.
The NUT president emphasised that protecting lives and property remains a constitutional responsibility of the government and called on authorities at all levels to intensify efforts to secure schools.
He also urged citizens to support security agencies by providing timely and credible intelligence capable of preventing attacks and protecting communities.
Education stakeholders warn that persistent insecurity could worsen school dropout rates, disrupt examinations and undermine investments aimed at improving learning outcomes across the country.
