LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has arrested a resident of Meiran for allegedly dumping refuse into a drainage channel during rainfall, as the agency intensifies enforcement against practices that contribute to flooding and environmental pollution.
The suspect, identified as a resident of No. 13, Lanre Adefiranye Street, Baale Bus Stop, Meiran, was arrested on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, following a tip-off received by LAWMA’s enforcement team.
The operation was carried out jointly by the LAWMA Enforcement Team, the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), popularly known as KAI, and mobile police officers attached to the enforcement team.
LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed the arrest in a post on his official X account.
He said the suspect was caught at the scene while allegedly disposing of refuse into the drainage channel during rainfall.
According to him, the suspect was subsequently taken to the KAI headquarters for further prosecution.
“The arrest followed a tip-off received by the enforcement team alleging that the resident was dumping refuse into a drainage channel during today’s rainfall,” Gbadegesin stated.
Gbadegesin said indiscriminate waste disposal remains a major environmental concern in Lagos, particularly because refuse dumped into drainage channels can obstruct the flow of stormwater and worsen flooding during heavy rainfall.
He urged residents to comply with environmental regulations by using designated waste collection channels and avoiding the dumping of refuse on roads, waterways and drainage systems.
“Residents are once again strongly advised to desist from indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly into drainage channels, as such actions contribute directly to blocked drains and flooding,” he warned.
The latest arrest underscores LAWMA’s continuing enforcement efforts to curb improper waste disposal and keep Lagos’ drainage networks and public spaces free of refuse.
