LAGOS, Nigeria – A motorist has died after a Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle lost control and somersaulted multiple times along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway in Lagos.
The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Charity Bus Stop, inward Iyana Isolo, according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Authorities said the lone accident left the driver trapped inside the wreckage, where he was later confirmed dead.
LASTMA officials, working alongside officers from the Mosafejo Police Division, responded swiftly to the scene and recovered the victim’s body while ensuring traffic flow remained uninterrupted.
The remains were subsequently evacuated by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit to a public mortuary, while the damaged vehicle was handed over to the police for further investigation.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and urged motorists to prioritise road safety.
“Motorists are strongly urged to eschew reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, excessive speeding and every form of traffic infraction capable of precipitating avoidable tragedies on our roads,” he said.
“The sanctity and preservation of human life must remain paramount in the conduct of every road user. No journey is so urgent as to justify compromising safety.”
Authorities said investigations are ongoing to determine the immediate and underlying causes of the crash.
The latest incident adds to concerns about speeding and reckless driving on major Lagos highways, particularly during late-night and early-morning travel periods.
