AKURE, Nigeria – The Ondo State Government has expanded its digital education programme by equipping 50 public secondary schools with modern digital learning facilities and strengthening teachers’ digital skills as part of efforts to prepare students for a technology-driven future.
The Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Igbekele Ajibefun, announced the initiative on Friday during the grand finale of the fourth edition of the Digital Quiz Competition for secondary schools in Akure.
Ajibefun said the intervention forms part of the state’s broader education reform agenda aimed at modernising classroom instruction and improving students’ digital literacy.
He disclosed that Information and Communication Technology (ICT) teachers in public secondary schools recently completed a week-long digital education training organised in partnership with the state’s technical partners.
According to him, the capacity-building programme will continue to ensure more teachers acquire the digital skills required to effectively prepare students for the demands of the 21st-century economy.
The commissioner also revealed that digital learning equipment had been distributed to 50 public secondary schools through one of the state’s technical partners to support the transition to technology-enabled teaching and learning.
He explained that the Digital Quiz Competition was introduced to encourage innovation, strengthen digital literacy and promote academic excellence among students.
“The competition is designed to equip students with the technological knowledge and digital skills required to thrive in an increasingly technology-driven world.”
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Akindele Ige, described the competition as more than an academic exercise.
He said it provides students with opportunities to develop critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving abilities while nurturing innovation and preparing them for future careers.
The Ondo State Government said it remains committed to expanding access to digital education as part of efforts to improve learning outcomes and build a globally competitive education system.
