ABEOKUTA, Nigeria – The Ogun State Government shuts two fuel stations in Abeokuta for violating sanitation laws, intensifying enforcement against facilities that fail to provide functional public toilets.
The sealed stations — Conoil Fuel Station, Ibara, and Moore Fuel Station, Asero — are found in breach of the Environmental Management Law, 2006, and the Ogun State Public Health Law, 2020, following an inspection by the state’s Environmental Compliance Taskforce.
Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya, condemns the infractions during Thursday’s enforcement exercise.
“It is unacceptable that a fuel station operating for decades lacks a public toilet,” Oresanya says. “Equally unacceptable is maintaining facilities that are unusable and unhygienic.”
He explains that state regulations require fuel stations, markets, eateries and public spaces to provide clean conveniences as part of efforts to eradicate open defecation.
Conoil Fuel Station will remain sealed until it installs a functional toilet, while Moore Fuel Station must fully rehabilitate its facilities before reopening.
“These closures serve as a deterrent,” Oresanya warns. “Any public facility found violating sanitation standards will be sealed. Compliance is non-negotiable.”
The commissioner discloses that Ogun has deployed over 80 ultra-modern biogas public toilets through public-private partnerships in communities including Isheri, Kara, Ibafo and Mowe.
He urges commuters, transport operators and event organisers to use mobile toilets, stressing that collective responsibility is key to achieving a clean and healthy environment.
