NUJ, NAN Seek Stronger INEC Partnership to Boost Credible 2027 Elections

ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, and the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) have called for a stronger partnership with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to improve electoral transparency, strengthen voter confidence and ensure credible elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.
The call was made on Wednesday at the 2026 Democracy Roundtable, themed “Making Nigerians’ Votes Count in 2027: The Role of INEC,” organised by the NUJ NAN Chapel in Abuja.
Speaking at the event, NAN Managing Director, Ali M. Ali, represented by Editor-in-Chief Mufutau Ojo, described the forum as timely as Nigeria prepares for the Osun governorship election and the 2027 general elections.
He pledged NAN’s continued support for initiatives that promote credible elections and deepen democratic governance.
NUJ FCT Council Chairman, Grace Ike, said credible elections require collaboration among INEC, the media, civil society, security agencies and citizens. She advocated greater voter education, transparency in electoral technology, improved complaints mechanisms and targeted enlightenment campaigns for youths, rural communities and persons with disabilities.
The council also announced plans to establish an Election Situation Room for the 2027 elections to monitor electoral developments, verify information, combat misinformation and enhance journalists’ safety, while urging INEC to strengthen collaboration through liaison officers and joint voter education initiatives.
Stakeholders further called for issue-based campaigns, early voter registration, rejection of vote-buying and stronger protection for journalists, saying sustained media-INEC collaboration remains vital to safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy.
