GOMBE, Nigeria – A fatal road accident involving a bus conveying members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) occurs on Monday evening in Gombe State as the journalists return from a wedding ceremony.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirms the incident in a statement issued late Monday, saying rescue operations are ongoing.
The Gombe State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Samson Kaura, says the crash involves a lone vehicle and describes the incident as “very fatal,” though the exact number of casualties remains unclear. “It is a lone accident, and from the information we have so far, it is very fatal,” Kaura says. “We have not received full details yet because our officers are still on the ground conducting rescue operations.”
According to the FRSC, the journalists are travelling in a hired bus after attending the wedding ceremony of a colleague working with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in the southern part of the state.
Preliminary findings suggest that a suspected tyre burst causes the driver to lose control before the vehicle somersaults.
Kaura assures that the corps will release a comprehensive report, including confirmed casualty figures, after the conclusion of rescue and recovery operations.
FRSC personnel remain at the scene, while investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
Further updates are expected as authorities work to establish the full extent of the tragedy.
