LAGOS, Nigeria – The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast thunderstorms and rainfall across several parts of Nigeria on Monday, September 28, 2026, with residents in northern, central and southern states advised taking precautions against severe weather conditions.
NiMet said parts of Adamawa and Taraba could experience thunderstorms with light rainfall during the morning. Later in the day, scattered thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected across parts of Jigawa, Kebbi, Kaduna, Borno, Gombe, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara, Adamawa and Bauchi states.
For the central region, the agency forecast cloudy conditions in the morning, with possible thunderstorms and light rainfall over parts of Benue, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Plateau, Niger and Kwara states.
It added that isolated thunderstorms with moderate rainfall could occur across parts of the FCT, Benue, Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa and Kwara during the afternoon and evening.
In the southern region, NiMet forecast cloudy conditions with chances of light rainfall over parts of Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Delta, Lagos, Bayelsa and Cross River.
Thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are also expected across most parts of the region later in the day.
NiMet advised residents to remain indoors where possible during thunderstorms and avoid open spaces, tall trees and exposed structures.
The agency also urged residents to secure loose outdoor items and stay away from unstable structures because of the possibility of strong winds.
Residents were advised to avoid flooded roads and remain alert in low-lying and flood-prone areas.
Motorists were also urged to drive cautiously as rainfall could reduce visibility and make roads slippery.
NiMet further advised residents to unplug sensitive electrical appliances during thunderstorms to protect them against possible power surges.
Airline operators were also advised to obtain airport-specific weather information from NiMet to support safe flight planning and operations.
