ABUJA, Nigeria – Nigeria has intensified efforts to deliver healthcare services directly to underserved communities, as part of activities marking World Health Day 2026.
Across multiple states, outreach programmes provided vaccinations, maternal care, and disease screening to populations with limited access to health services, according to a report released via the World Health Organization (WHO) Nigeria.
In Adamawa State, health workers administered missed vaccinations to children and screened pregnant women, while similar interventions in Cross River, Rivers and Bayelsa focused on rebuilding trust and countering misinformation.
WHO Country Representative, Dr Pavel Ursu, said access and trust remain critical to improving health outcomes.
“Scientific progress only saves lives when people can access, understand and trust it,” he said.
Despite progress, Nigeria continues to face gaps in immunisation coverage and maternal healthcare, particularly in rural and conflict-affected areas.
Health officials said the outreach aligns with national reforms under the Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative, aimed at achieving universal health coverage.
