ABUJA, Nigeria – The World Health Organization (WHO) has convened diplomats and international partners in Abuja to accelerate Nigeria’s progress toward universal health coverage through coordinated global support.
The Ambassadorial Health Diplomacy Roundtable on Thursday brought together heads of mission and development partners to align resources with Nigeria’s health reform agenda.
WHO Country Representative, Dr Pavel Ursu, said stronger international collaboration is essential in tackling cross-border health threats.
“Health is both a national and global priority… requiring coordinated, cross-country action,” he said.
Participants reviewed progress in immunisation and disease control but identified persistent challenges, including low coverage rates, high out-of-pocket healthcare costs and rising non-communicable diseases.
The meeting also emphasised the need to strengthen health security systems, surveillance and workforce capacity.
Stakeholders pledged to deepen partnerships and sustain engagement to support Nigeria’s drive toward universal health coverage.
