BENIN CITY, Nigeria – No fewer than 4,000 residents of Edo State’s Ovia Federal Constituency will benefit from a National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) health insurance scheme facilitated by Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa.
The initiative, unveiled in Benin City, is designed to reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses and improve access to quality healthcare for vulnerable residents.
Speaking during the presentation of NHIA cards, Idahosa said the programme reflects a commitment to improving public health and ensuring residents receive medical care without financial hardship.
“This intervention is aimed at ensuring that our people have access to quality healthcare without the financial burden that often prevents many from seeking timely medical attention,” he said.
The Edo State NHIA Coordinator, Dr Theodore Ehannire, disclosed that more than 2,000 beneficiaries have already been enrolled, with their health insurance cards activated for use at accredited hospitals across the state.
He explained that healthcare costs under the programme have been fully prepaid, allowing beneficiaries to receive treatment without making direct payments at healthcare facilities.
According to him, the insurance package covers medical consultations, treatment, maternal healthcare services, safe delivery for pregnant women and minor surgical procedures.
The member representing Ovia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Omosede Gabriella Igbinedion, described the intervention as a people-centred initiative that would improve access to healthcare and reduce self-medication.
She said investments in healthcare remain as important as physical infrastructure, stressing that improved access to quality medical services directly enhances residents’ quality of life.
Distribution of NHIA cards is expected to commence shortly, giving thousands of beneficiaries’ access to healthcare services at accredited hospitals across Edo State.
