ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has debunked viral social media publications claiming that the Federal Government suspended students’ upkeep allowances under the student loan scheme.
In a statement issued on Thursday, NELFUND describes the reports as fake, misleading and designed to spread panic among beneficiaries and the public.
The statement, signed by Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, says the misinformation includes a fabricated statement falsely attributed to the agency and an AI-generated newspaper front page purportedly linked to the Nigerian Tribune.
“NELFUND wishes to state unequivocally that no directive has been issued by the Federal Government or NELFUND regarding the suspension of upkeep allowances,” the statement reads.
“The publications in circulation did not originate from NELFUND or any authorised government channel.”
The Fund says the circulated newspaper cover is artificially generated and does not represent a genuine publication.
NELFUND reaffirms its commitment to the transparent and efficient disbursement of student loans and upkeep support in line with its mandate.
The agency urges students, parents and the general public to disregard unverified publications and rely only on official communication channels for accurate information.
It also warns against sharing false online content capable of causing anxiety and misinformation among beneficiaries.
