ABUJA, Nigeria – The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reaffirmed its commitment to delivering credible, high-quality, and accessible data to guide Nigeria’s evidence-based policies and drive sustainable national development.
Speaking Monday at the 2025 World Statistics Day in Abuja, Statistician-General of the Federation, Adeyemi Adeniran, said the world’s rapid digital evolution, economic transformation, and climate challenges make reliable data more vital than ever.
“To navigate today’s complex realities, we need timely and quality data presented in usable formats to inform key decisions across all sectors,” Adeniran said.
He revealed that Nigeria’s recent GDP rebasing, concluded in July 2025, shifted the base year from 2010 to 2019 to reflect current economic realities. “The rebasing provides a clearer picture of real growth and strengthens data-driven planning and investment,” he added.
Adeniran emphasised the bureau’s guiding principle: “Data for Everyone.” “It’s not just a slogan—it’s a national commitment to democratise access and promote data-informed governance,” he said.
“Good statistics are about people, not just numbers. Each data point tells a story—of farmers, students, and entrepreneurs shaping our nation,” he stated.
Representatives from the World Bank and UNICEF commended NBS for its innovation and reliability.
The World Bank’s representative, Dr. Victoria Okafor pledged continued technical support, while UNICEF’s Bai Ajoku called for sustained investment in Nigeria’s statistical systems.
