ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigerian Navy has seized 757 kilogrammes of suspected cannabis in three intelligence-led operations across Lagos and handed the exhibits to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation, authorities say.
The 757kg suspected cannabis was recovered in 18 bags during separate operations conducted between 7 April and 17 July, according to the Commander of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) BEECROFT, Commodore Aiwuyor Adams-Aliu, who spoke at the handover ceremony at the Navy Base, Apapa, on Friday.
Adams-Aliu said the operations resulted in the interception of five bags at Abule Osun on 7 April, two bags at Ikare Island on 13 April, and 11 bags at Alpha Beach on 15 July.
He attributed the successful operations to the Nigerian Navy’s Western Regional Control Centre, codenamed Falcon Eye, describing it as an advanced surveillance system equipped with long-range cameras and sensors capable of monitoring coastal waters beyond the reach of patrol boats.
According to him, “Five bags were intercepted at Abule Osun on April 7, two bags at Ikare Island on April 13, and 11 bags at Alpha Beach on July 15.”
The naval commander said the Falcon Eye platform provides real-time intelligence that enables security personnel to intercept criminal suspects before they execute their operations.
He added that the seizures reflect the technology-driven maritime security strategy of
Receiving the exhibits on behalf of the NDLEA Marine Command, Commander Narcotics Luka Yerima praised the Nigerian Navy for its continued collaboration in tackling organised crime.
“The agency remains committed to working closely with other security agencies to dismantle criminal networks involved in illicit drug trafficking,” Yerima said.
He added that the seized substances would undergo forensic examination while investigations continue to identify and prosecute those behind the trafficking network.
