LAGOS, Nigeria – Seven suspected illegal waste dumpers have been arrested during an overnight enforcement operation by the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) in the Pattey area of Lagos Island.
The arrests were made on Wednesday as LAWMA intensified efforts to clear illegal waste disposal black spots and enforce environmental regulations across Lagos State.
LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the suspects had been transferred to the agency’s Task Force Office in Oshodi for prosecution.
The suspects were identified as Nafisat Alabi, 30; Aminullah Abdulrasheed, 49; Segun Adeyemi, 45; Gboyega Osuntuyi, 44; Segun Olowe, 26; Adebayo Ibrahim, 29; and Stephen Ogboru, 36.
Gbadegesin said LAWMA would continue to enforce waste management regulations across the state. “LAWMA will not relent in enforcing waste management regulations. Sustained monitoring and enforcement remain essential to curbing illegal dumping and promoting responsible waste practices,” he said.
The enforcement operation was, however, met with resistance after a group of suspected hoodlums reportedly stormed the LAWMA field office in the area and attempted to interfere with enforcement officers.
Gbadegesin commended the police for their intervention and urged residents, traders and businesses to support the agency’s efforts to improve sanitation.
