LAGOS, Nigeria – The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 84 commercial and private vehicles during a weekend enforcement operation targeting one-way driving, illegal parking and other traffic violations across parts of Lagos.
The operation covered Idumota, Iddo, Ijora-Olopa, Costain and Onipanu, according to a statement issued by LASTMA spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq, on Sunday. Taofiq said the enforcement was aimed at curbing traffic violations contributing to congestion and safety risks on major roads.
The agency said particular attention was paid to commercial buses allegedly reversing against traffic from Iddo towards Idumota through Cater Bridge.
LASTMA described the practice as dangerous to motorists, commuters and pedestrians.
The enforcement was reportedly resisted in some locations, with some LASTMA personnel attacked and injured.
The agency also said several suspected miscreants accused of assaulting officers and damaging operational vehicles were arrested.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the operation was necessary to curb persistent violations and restore discipline along major road corridors.
He warned transport operators, commercial drivers and other road users against turning under-bridge spaces, road setbacks and other unauthorised locations into illegal garages. “Public roads, bridges and under-bridge spaces would not be allowed to be used for illegal loading, parking, vehicle repairs or garage operations,” Bakare-Oki said.
He added that enforcement would continue to ensure compliance with traffic regulations and protect motorists, commuters and pedestrians.
LASTMA urged motorists and transport operators to avoid one-way driving, dangerous reversing, illegal parking and indiscriminate loading.
The agency also advised members of the public to report traffic violations through its toll-free short code, 3367.
